How to try on clothes before you buy

Use the store’s try-on if it has one. Otherwise, try a screenshot on your photo with an app like ButtonUp, and check the size chart.

Stores with their own try-on

Each store’s try-on works only on its own products. Google Try On is the exception, covering eligible listings from many stores.

Store Where What it covers
Zara Zara app, 43 markets including the US Zara items, on an avatar of you
ASOS iPhone app, some UK and US customers About 10,000 products
Amazon Amazon Shopping app, US Amazon clothing, on your photo
Google Try On Search and Shopping, 18 countries Eligible clothes and shoes, on your photo

Google Try On can’t use a screenshot, and it skips swimwear, lingerie and accessories. Its 18 countries don’t include Germany, France, Italy, Spain or the Netherlands.

Does SHEIN have virtual try-on?

Not that we could find. Its App Store listing doesn’t mention one. We found none at H&M, Uniqlo or Aritzia either.

For these stores, and for anything you find on Pinterest or Instagram, use an app that works from a picture. ButtonUp, the app we make, does it in three steps.

  1. Add a full-length photo of yourself.
  2. Screenshot the product, share it to ButtonUp, or open the store in the app’s Browse tab.
  3. See it on you, then go back to the product from your gallery.

Is virtual try-on accurate?

For color, cut and length, yes, and those often decide whether you’d wear something. Small details like prints, buttons or logos can come out slightly different, because the image is generated. Google recommends a full-length photo in good light, in fitted clothes.

Try-on can’t show your size, how much a fabric stretches, how heavy it is or how it feels. These checks cover the rest.

  • Read the size chart, then the garment measurements if the store lists them.
  • Lay a piece you own that fits well flat, and measure it across the chest and down the length. For trousers, measure the waist and inseam. Compare those numbers with the listing.
  • Read reviews that mention fit, like “runs small,” especially from people who give their height and usual size.
  • Check the fabric. Elastane or spandex means stretch, and woven cotton, linen and wool have little.
  • Check the return window, and whether sale items are final.
